The Barrie Colts/Fireantz Ball Hockey Club completed back to back tournament Championships this last weekend winning the International Maple Leaf Cup Tournament in Niagara Falls. With a little help from our local opposition, the team lineup was boosted with a fantastic group of kids eager to engage in top level competition.
Opening with
a tough loss to a solid New Jersey EHT squad, it was an uphill battle all of the way through. Barrie rebounded with a convincing win vs St. Catherines Cyclones in their second game. A decisive third game victory set the stage for a head to head semi final battle vs. the US National champions from Leominster Mass. Barrie scored midway through the second and held on for a stunning 1-0 victory. Abe Holmes fired the deflected winner into the net. This victory earned Barrie entry into the finals vs. the hometown Niagara Falls squad in 35 Celcius heat .
The final game was a test of systems and wits and Barrie opened the scoring with a Braydon Booth shot in the second frame. Niagara replied later in the second and the teams entered the third tied at one. With 2 minutes to play, Cam Cochrane found an open Noah Palmen in the slot and he buried the snap shot to ice the win for the locals.
This capped off a 24-3 season with tournament wins in Niagara Falls and Boston.
